Trends in Psychological Distress Over the Course of the Treatment Episode Part V–Simple Hierarchical Linear Models Showing Simple Change

Hierarchical linear modeling (or HLM) methods are used to study change in psychological distress over time. For each person, an individual trend is line fit to that patient's psychological distress scores over time. The method uses all observations for individual patients and takes into account the fact that patients received the assessments at different times in their treatment histories. After fitting "individual" curves for each patient, overall trends in the "average curves" or "trajectories" are studied and related to other factors. HLM modeling can be considered the "definitive" method for studying change in the kinds of naturally-occurring treatment assessment data from these projects.

The hierarchical models show that on the average patients experience decreasing psychological distress over the course of their involvement with the programs represented here.

On average,

All clients had a decreasing level of psychological distress (p < .001).
Overall, women show of a decrease in psychological distress scores over time as compared to men (p < .02).
