Changes in HIV Testing Practices as Reported in a Post-Partum Survey
of Women in Cook County (Chicago) Delivery Rooms in 1997 and 1999 as a
Function of Whether the Delivery Hospital had Developed a Perinatal
HIV/AIDS Task Force
This Knowledge Item shows the
results of post-partum survey conducted with 22,216 women in 64 Cook
County (Chicago), Illinois hospitals in 1997 and 1999. Between the
baseline year (1997) and the follow-up year (1999), the Cook County
Perinatal Task Force was formed by the Cook County/Hektoen Institute
HRSA SPNS project, and trainings and infrastructure development
activities were offered to 67 hospitals which are part of six Maternal
and Child Health Perinatal Networks (of affiliated hospitals).
This Knowledge Item presents the
results of the survey in terms of whether or not the delivery hospital
had developed a Perinatal HIV/AIDS Task Force. Overall, the presence
of a Task Force led to a statistically significant greater increase in
state-of-the-art practices between 1997 and 1999 than was found for
those hospitals that did not have such a Task Force.
Note that all survey responses are
self-reports of the women. The survey is shown in the Data
Source section of this Knowledge Item.
The data for this
Knowledge Item derives from the work of the Hektoen Institute/Cook
County SPNS Cooperative Agreement. The survey study was designed by
Mary Driscoll, R.N., M.P.H., and Deane Taylor, R.N., and the staff of
their project as well as the Cook County Perinatal Task Force and the
Illinois Department of Health. Data were made available for use here
by Mary Driscoll and Deane Taylor, and this Knowledge Item was authored in collaboration with Ms. Driscoll and Ms.
