DC Collaborative-01
A Model for Reducing Cultural, Linguistic, and Organizational
Barriers to Care for Women with HIV/AIDS in the Metropolitan
Washington D.C. Area
The
Center for Women Policy Studies (CWPS), in a collaborative project
with PROTOTYPES, Centers for Innovation in Health, Mental Health, and
Social Services, was funded under the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as
a Special Projects of National Significance (SPNS) for five years (1994
– 1999) for the Metro DC
Collaborative for Women with HIV/AIDS. The primary goal of this
project was to reduce cultural, linguistic, and organizational
barriers to care for women with HIV/AIDS in the metropolitan
Washington DC area (including parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West
Virginia as well as the District of Columbia). Various mechanisms were
employed to accomplish project goals, including conducting
comprehensive assessments of service needs, gaps, and barriers,
encouraging capacity building, disseminating information, and shaping
policy related to the system of care for women with HIV/AIDS.
The Metro
DC Collaborative for Women with HIV/AIDS: Final Project Evaluation
Report shows that the activities of the project were
well-received. Guidelines are also given within the report for
potential replications in other locations.
