Knowledge Item: CA-Training Impact: Patient Care-03
Relationship Between Trainee Characteristics and Reported Changes in Patient Care Post-Training

In a cross-cutting telephone study of 218 service providers who were interviewed an average of eight months after an HIV/AIDS training, patient care changes were observed. Trainee background characteristics (e.g., trainee age, gender, job characteristics), controlling for project site, predicted whether or not a specific example of patient care change was provided for each area assessed by the interview.

Direct service providers were more likely to have provided a concrete example of patient care change when asked whether the training affected how they treat patients, how they educate patients/families, and how they make referrals. Program administrators, on the other hand, were more likely to have provided a patient care change example when asked about how the training affected the overall level of the care in the system (e.g., in establishing collaborations, creating educational opportunities, and providing care at the broad level). This differentiation also provides support for the the validity of the evaluation design.

Note: A related set of Knowledge Items assess how the training affected the health care systems at the agencies of the individuals trained.

The coding of patient care change was done by Bernadette Lalonde, Ph.D., and Karina Uldall, M.D., of the University of Washington using open-ended responses to questions in the training follow up semi-structured interview conducted by The Measurement Group.
