Knowledge Item: CA-Psychosocial Services-31
Model of the "Typical" Psychosocial Service Program: I. Major Types of Services

This Knowledge Item presents two types of models of the "typical" experience in a psychosocial supports service program experienced by 2063 persons living with HIV/AIDS. The models presented here show the interrelationships between the different types of services provided to patients.

The model shown below relates the probability that a participant receives each of seven major types of (non-overlapping) services to an underlying latent dimension of "program involvement" or intensity using latent trait analysis (or two-parameter item response theory scaling).

The seven types of services and their abbreviations are placed in this table corresponding to their position in the Latent Trait Model Item Plots below

GTHIVPRV= HIV prevention/intervention GTINDCO2= Individual counseling GTASSES2= Psychiatric/psychosocial assessment
GTGRPCO2= Group (not family/couple) counseling GTFAMCO2= Family/couple counseling GTSUBABU= Substance abuse services
GTCASMGT= Case management

In this "idealized" model of treatment involvement, the initiation of individual and group counseling services represent intermediate levels of program involvement. At a higher level of program involvement, psychiatric assessment and family counseling tend to start to occur. Substance abuse and HIV transmission prevention services can be initiated (but may not be) at low-to-high levels of program involvement. Case management tends to be initiated early, earlier than most other services, and may guide the initiation of the other services.
