Selected Outcomes from the Evaluation of the Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative with an Emphasis on the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Initiative and the BAGNC Scholars

This presentation was given February 21, 2006 at the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Initiative Steering Committee Meeting in Washington, DC. The presentation introduces a selected set of outcomes achieved by the Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative, one component of which is the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Scholars and Fellows Program. Programmatic and individual achievements are discussed, as are the relationships between these programs.

 

Enhancing Gerontological/Geriatric Nursing Education for Undergraduate Baccalaureate and Advanced Practice Nursing Programs

This report, dated August 16, 2006, summarizes the cross-cutting evaluation of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN] Geriatric Nursing Education Project. This project, funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation’s Geriatric Nursing Initiative, was a broad and long-term effort to improve the quality of training in geriatric nursing in American Schools of Nursing and to increase the number of nurses trained who are competent in geriatrics. Collectively, the 30 projects, which ran from 2002 through 2004, successfully strengthened the geriatric nursing offerings at their schools, increased the visibility of geriatric nursing programs in those institutions, and strengthened the permanent infrastructure for such programs.

 

Introduction to the Evaluation of the John A. Hartford Foundation’s Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity [BAGNC] Postdoctoral Fellows Program

The John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Nursing Scholarship Program, coordinated by the American Academy of Nursing, provides Pre- and Post- Doctoral Scholars with financial and leadership support to help redirect or strengthen their careers in geriatric nursing. This presentation describes the evaluation of the Postdoctoral Fellows Program and summarizes major evaluation findings. The presentation was given at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 26, 2006.

 

Conclusions from the Cross-Cutting Evaluation of the Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence: A Component of the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Initiative

The John A. Hartford Foundation created five Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNEs), coordinated at the American Academy of Nursing, as part of the John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Nursing Initiative Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Program. The goals of the HCGNEs are to provide enriched and increased opportunities for training, research, clinical model development, and policy development for nurses who would develop into leaders in the next generation of geriatric nursing. This report covers the activities of the five HCGNEs funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation during an initial funding cycle of January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2005. The HCGNEs have been renewed through December 31, 2010.

 

Preliminary Conclusions from the Cross-Cutting Evaluation of the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University:
A Program of the John A. Hartford Foundation

In 1996, the John A. Hartford Foundation established the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education, Division of Nursing to improve health care for older adults by addressing the need for well-trained nurses in a broad range of services for older adults. The Institute has implemented numerous programs related to nursing education, practice, research, and public policy/consumer education. This is a revision of a presentation given at the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing National Board of Advisors Meeting in April 2005 and addresses program activities conducted from September 1, 1996 through February 28, 2006.

 

Conclusions from the Cross-Cutting Evaluation of the Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative: Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Coordinating Center at the American Academy of Nursing

In 2000, the John A. Hartford Foundation launched the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) Initiative. The American Academy of Nursing was selected as an active partner that would provide a home for a Coordinating Center to facilitate the activities of the programs and grantees who were part of the BAGNC Initiative – including the John A. Hartford Geriatric Nursing Scholars program, the Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNE) and the Nursing School Geriatric Investment Program (NSGIP), to foster communications among grantees and the Foundation, and to provide oversight of various kinds for the different programs. This report, dated October 19, 2004, summarizes program activities for the first four years of the grant, July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2004.

 

Evaluation of the John A. Hartford Foundation's Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Scholars Program: An Interim Report on a Program Administered by the American Academy of Nursing

The John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Nursing Scholarship Program, coordinated by the American Academy of Nursing, provides Pre-Doctoral Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows with financial and leadership support to help redirect or strengthen their careers in geriatric nursing. This report documents the impact of the John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Nursing Scholarship Program on the professional and leadership development of the first two cohorts of Hartford Scholars. The report, dated March 7, 2003, details the activities and successes of the Hartford Scholars Program between July 1, 2001 and December 31, 2002.

Conclusions from the Cross-Cutting Evaluation of the Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative: Nursing School Geriatric Investment Program

In addition to the five Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, The John A. Hartford Foundation awarded seven Schools of Nursing three-year grants to improve small, specific areas of their programs in gerontological nursing. The program required a significant financial match from the recipient organizations. This report, dated October 19, 2004, covers the activities of the seven Schools of Nursing funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation under its Nursing School Geriatric Investment Program between January 1, 2001 and June 30, 2004.

Evaluation of the annual BAGNC Leadership Conference: A John A. Hartford Foundation Funded Project for the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Initiative


The annual Leadership Conference for the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) Initiative is held to facilitate leadership development among the Scholars supported by the Hartford Foundation—the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) Hartford Scholars, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Advanced Practice Nursing Scholars, and the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University (NYU) Scholars. The evaluation reports shown here include analysis of the experiences of Conference attendees and presents recommendations for future conferences.

Evaluation of Annual Conference: The Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Initiative John A. Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence

The Annual Conference for the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Initiative, funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation, was held on Thursday, June 27th and Friday, June 28th, 2002 at the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The goals of the Conference were to (1) provide opportunities for collaboration among Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNE) Directors, Faculty, and Staff; (2) assist HCGNEs in achieving synergistic objectives and programs; and (3) strengthen each HCGNE through information sharing, and joint planning and programming. The target audience for this Conference was the Director and Staff from each of the five HCGNEs (Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing; University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Nursing; University of California San Francisco School of Nursing; University of Iowa College of Nursing; University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing). This report summarizes the Conference attendee's responses to the evaluation and presents recommendations for future conferences.

Evaluation of the John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Nursing Initiative Stakeholders Meeting

The Geriatric Nursing Stakeholders Meeting sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation and held on October 1, 2002. The meeting served as a forum for the participants to discuss various goals and strategies for the future of all John A. Hartford Foundation geriatric nursing programs. The meeting was attended by Directors of Hartford Centers for Geriatric Nursing Excellence; Directors of Nursing School Geriatric Investment Program grants; and other participants (representing the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at NYU). This memorandum presents the responses to a meeting evaluation form given to participants in Stakeholders Meeting.

Achievements of Hartford Scholars

14 tables show the achievement of Hartford Geriatric Nursing Scholars through November 13, 2006. Tables are shown for cohorts of scholars funded in July 2001, July 2002, July 2003, ,July 2004, July 2005, and July 2006. All Hartford Scholar funding periods are two years. Thus, as of July 2006, the 2001 Scholars were three years past the end of their funding period, the 2002 Scholars were two years past the end of their funding period, the 2003 Scholars were one year past the end of their funding period, the 2004 Scholars were just ending their funding period, and the 2005 Scholars were half-way through their funding period. Separate tables are shown within each cohort for Pre-doctoral and Post-doctoral Scholars. Report dated November 13, 2006.

 

Highlights of Scholars' Activities and Successes

It is very clear that the John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Nursing Scholarship Program is a highly successful one whose Scholars are establishing themselves as productive professionals in their chosen field and, in many cases, exhibiting strong signs of professional leadership. The following tables highlight some of the activities and successes of the Hartford Scholars that occurred between July 1, 2001 and December 31, 2002.

 

Data Summary from the Evaluation of the John A. Hartford Foundation’s Geriatric Nursing Initiative Web-Based Activities

The Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative (HGNI) includes programs designed to increase the supply of geriatric nurses and the quality of care provided to older adults by building academic geriatric nursing capacity nationwide. Many of these efforts are conducted using web-based technologies. This report, dated September 28, 2004, presents a preliminary summary of the HGNI Grantees’ web-based activities. The intent of this report is primarily to survey the individual grantees and catalog the totality of their activities.
