Conference Abstract

Girl Talk. L Neal-McCollum, K Luboff, K Waite. YouthCare Project.

90 Minute Workshop

Category: Adolescents & Young People

Presentation Date & Time: 03/27/98 13:45:00

This session will use interactive experiences with art, movement and music generated by the participants to explore and articulate issues facing young women today. How do women help each other? What is it about the slumber party, the quilting bee and the beauty shop that soothes and enlivens us? We'll use collage, Polaroid, drum and kazoo to identify strengths as well as stresses, and find what is common among us, whatever our age or HIV status. Our collaborative "product" will develop as we unfold our reactions to the comforts and the challenges that only "girl talk" seems to provide. Facilitated by three inveterate conversationalists whose work is to turn talk into action: a peer educator, an outreach worker and a clinical social worker who represent a 30-year age span. There may also be facilitated discussion focusing on the unique characteristics of peer and intergenerational conversation as an enhancement of support for young women facing HIV. Participants will have the opportunity to identify settings and strategies useful in activating young women's capabilities for mutual problem solving and encouragement.
