Presentation Abstract
Issues in Implementing Evaluations of HIV Programs for Adolescent
Women. M. Kipke, L. Melchior, G. Huba.
Introduction: Evaluations of programs for young women who are
living with or at-high-risk-for-HIV must address a number of issues. Many standardized
assessments may be unsuitable for use with young women because they are written for adult
populations, oriented towards male-specific issues, or may be linguistically or culturally
inappropriate.
Project Description: This presentation focuses on the
implementation of several federally-funded evaluations of programs for young people with
HIV, and the issues that specifically concern collecting data from adolescent women.
Results: Examples from program evaluations funded by sources such
as the Centers for Disease Control, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and
the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment are presented to illustrate these points.
Implications: Evaluations of HIV programs for adolescent women must
be sensitive to the context in which the young women live. Suggestions for promising
techniques for program evaluations with young women are discussed.
