Welcome to SPNS/Fax: An Electronic Report from HRSA/HAB's SPNS Cooperative Agreements. In each issue of SPNS/Fax, we will highlight findings from the HRSA Special Projects of National Significance Program Cooperative Agreements. The projects have been funded to develop innovative models of HIV/AIDS care. SPNS/Fax reports are distributed every two weeks by fax machine to all subscribers. All issues of SPNS/Fax are also available at this Web site. Due to slight differences in the media, issues distributed by fax machine may appear slightly different from those posted on this Web site, but the content is identical.
The Ninth Annual Conference on Social Work and HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles, California, June 4-7, 1997 will provide a venue for information sharing on numerous topics, including welfare reform, managed care, service delivery for people living with HIV/AIDS, and new treatments. SPNS/Fax is pleased to announce the participation of HRSA SPNS Program grantees in this conference. The following is a list of the authors, titles, and brief synopses of the presentations to be made by these projects. Many of these presentations also are posted on the World Wide Web at www.TheMeasurementGroup.com.

Innovative Models for Improving HIV Case Management Services. This paper focuses on case management services and presents a three-level approach to changing the way health and social services are provided--an approach being used collectively by a group of 27 Cooperative Agreement grantees of HRSA/HAB's SPNS.
A Randomized Clinical Trial of Psychosocial Intervention with an HIV/AIDS In-Home Service Population: Implications for the Cost and Organization of Care. D Cherin, F De Jong, & B Stiefel. This paper details two models of care utilized by the Visiting Nurse Association that were tested for advanced stage AIDS patients receiving in-home services, and provides implications regarding the cost-effectiveness and patient benefits of the model.
Missouri Department of Health Integrated Care Program. J Dempsey & T Shaw. This presentation details the project goals, examines the three unique models, and explores the evaluation of the Missouri Department of Health's Integrated Care Program and its three model sites.
Results from an Innovative Community and Hospital-based Case Management Program for Haitians with HIV/AIDS Living in the Boston Metropolitan Area. S Geron, E Jean-Louis, & N Cesar. This roundtable session provides information on the Center for Community Health, Education, and Research and its case management and prevention and counseling program.
The Role of Community Outreach and Advocacy in Services for Substance Abusing Women with HIV. G Smereck, L Melchior, G Huba, & M Andersen. This presentation explores the benefits of the Personalized Nursing LIGHT Model of the Well-Being Institute and community linkages in helping substance abusing women with HIV to reduce barriers they may face.
Wiping Out Vertical Transmission: Practical Application of ACTG 076 in Both Urban and Rural Settings. R Bathon & A Burgess. This paper details guidelines that were developed by the Helena Hatch Special Care Center (HHSCC), Washington University School of Medicine, in response to the 076 protocol, and presents findings on the rate of vertical transmission with the use of ACTG 076 and the HHSCC guidelines.

The Role of Case Management in Innovative HIV Programs for Youth. Raising Community Awareness About Adolescent HIV Risk: Developmental Strategies to Improve Access to Health Care. L Shulman, R Feudo, G Shedlin, & S Vining. TOPS Project of Greater Bridgeport Adolescent Pregnancy Program. This paper discusses the developmental strategies for improving linkages with individual agencies and the AIDS Care Consortium to improve the quality of and access to HIV care services for the TOPS Project's population.
The Power of A Peer Led Support Group: Young People with HIV Supporting Young People with HIV. C Adams & G Pickett. Bay Area Young Positives. This workshop provides practical and hands-on information to care providers of HIV-positive youth on how to start a peer led support group, and explores the dynamics and issues within a support group.
