Findings from the University of Nevada School of Medicine Project

In order to prevent or slow weight loss in HIV infected patients, the University of Nevada has been providing comprehensive nutrition assessment and intervention services in their Early Intervention Clinic (EIC). Project staff have instituted thorough and frequent nutrition screening, routine counseling, and intervention with HIV-infected persons before their disease process worsened. The program has also provided more frequent tracking of measures that may be indicative of risks, such as body composition, metabolism, laboratory indices, and dietary intake. Analysis of baseline data for patients enrolled in the study showed correlation of declining CD4 counts, with lower mean weights, lower grip strength measurement and smaller arm circumference and skin folds. These simple measurements of muscle function and size may be early predictors of weight loss associated with advancing disease.
