Knowledge Item: CA-Training Impact: Provider Practices and Patient Care-05
How the Training Affected How Trainees Inform Patients or Their Families About Options

In a cross-cutting telephone study of 218 service providers who were interviewed an average of eight months after HIV/AIDS training, trainees were asked to provide concrete examples (if relevant) about how the training session(s) they attended improved or changed the way they inform patients/clients or family members about HIV/AIDS issues relevant to them.

Five themes were coded from participant comments about the training: (1) More Informed; (2) More Confident and Sensitive in Discussions; (3) Heightened Awareness; (4) Changes in Resources, Procedures, or Structure; and (5) No Effect.

Trainees found the training most effective when their examples and comments related to how the training taught them to be more confident and sensitive in discussions when educating patients/clients and their families, to be more informed of the process, and to provide changes in resources, procedures, or care structure.

Trainee characteristics did not predict the response types given or how effective the training was perceived in this area.
