How the Training Affected Trainee Referral Patterns

In a cross-cutting telephone study of 218 service providers who were interviewed an average of eight months after HIV/AIDS training, trainees were asked: "How have the training session(s) you attended improved or changed the way you refer patients/clients to other services? Please tell me a specific example from your own experience about how the training(s) affected your referrals/referral patterns."

Five themes were coded from the participant open-ended examples about changes in referral patterns due to the training: (1) Discovered New Referral Options; (2) Greater Confidence; (3) Heightened Awareness; (4) Do Not Provide Referrals; and (5) No Effect.

Trainees rated the training as effective when their concrete examples related to how the training helped them discover new referral options, gain greater confidence with referrals, and acquire a heightened awareness of the referral process.

Project site and gender predicted the example types that were provided, and project site predicted training effectiveness ratings. Trainees working in the HIV field for less than one year tended to find the training to be least effective in the referral area.
